In April 1994 the Chinese government connected, for the first time, the country to the Internet. Since then the Beijing government strives to maintain control over the online content accessed by the Chinese people and monitor the virtual behavior thereof. Below are some of the most popular sites that are banned or restricted in this country:


1 – Google:

in this case access is restricted to the Gmail accounts, Search services, Google Translate and Google Earth; 

2 – YouTube:

Google’s video site was completely interrupted in 2009. 

3 – Facebook:

The network is not part of the daily life of Chinese people for a long term. According to the government, the social network is a great disseminator of rumors and ideas contrary to the interests of the Chinese people. 

4 – Twitter:

Banned since 2009, the office of the company aims to open an office in Hong Kong in 2015 to try to expand its market in Asia. The most popular microblogging in the country is Weibo and has over 500 million users. 

5- Wikipedia:

the collective encyclopedia is censored in some terms such as “Dalai Lama”; “Democracy”; etc. 

6- LinkedIn:

the network that connects professionals was launched in February 2015 and as the Wikipedia, the social network was not completely banned in the country. However, its contents are hard inspected by Chinese censors. 

7- Dropbox:

access to the famous cloud storage service was cut completely in June 2014. However, the Chinese giant cloud services, Baidu offers similar storage and data synchronization services in the country.
